TREND DESCRIPTION AND JUSTIFICATION
The trend seventies femme celebrates the woman and emulates strong fashion trends influences from the 2010 film “The Runaways”. The trend reflects the modern teenage girl with rebel flair and scowling attitude incorporating bell bottom jeans, wide legged pants, band t-shirts, Tonal camel colours, brown suede, loose blouses, halter neck jumpsuits, this trend is for women who prefer not to think too hard. Capturing the care free attitude of the 1970’s hippies and the boundary breaking tendencies of Joan Jett this trend will prove influential in the youth market.
Interior trends will also emulate strong 1970’s influences the presence of yellow and orange combinations, plastic furniture and shag rugs, artistically the pop art influence of the 1960’s will be taken to a new level, with an emphasis on natural colour and textures juxtaposed against bold patterns and geometric shapes. Featured colours will include Dark stained woods, leafy green, pumpkin yellow and harvest gold. Curvilinear shapes will also have particular influence creating a nice balance.
Pivotal to the emergence of this trend is the release of the Film “The Runaways” in May 2010, which attracted popularity amongst the youth market particularly female youth. I predict this will influence young female designers for winter 2011 with the emergence of “The Runaways” inspired trends such as wide legged pants and 1970’s references. The construction of characters Joan Jett and Cherie Currie in the film played by popular and influential young female actresses Dakota Fanning and Kristin Stewart will also lead to the success of this trend being emulated in the female youth culture. Films often prove to be inspiration for young designers and I think the release of this film pre winter 2011 will sway designers to incorporate a 1970’s flavoured style to their collections.
